PIO - A CIAMBRA
Synopsis
Pio Amato is 14 and wants to be grown up. In the Ciambra, a Roma settlement near Gioia Tauro in Calabria, he lives off petty theft and small-time scams, smokes, drinks, and looks up to his older brother Cosimo, whom he idolises. Pio knows everyone in the area and moves between worlds – his own community, the Italians, the migrants stranded in the region. In “A Ciambra” (Italy 2017), Jonas Carpignano tells a coming-of-age story at the margins of Italian society, as a study of poverty and prejudice.
The film premiered in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs in Cannes in 2017, where it received the Europa Cinemas Label. At the David di Donatello awards, it was honoured for direction and screenplay. In 2017, “A Ciambra” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin.
