THE UNTAMED

A meteorite crashes in a remote mountain area. Down in a small town in the Mexican lowlands, meanwhile, a marriage is falling apart: Alejandra, mother of two, is married to Ángel, who hides his homosexuality and is secretly having an affair with her brother Fabián, a male nurse. Alejandra is deeply unhappy in this marriage. Then young Verónica appears and leads her to a remote farm where a being from another world lives, one that grants pleasure – and violence. In “The Untamed” (original title “La región salvaje”, Mexico 2016), Amat Escalante tells of a desire that cannot be tamed.

After “Heli” and “Los Bastardos”, Escalante here combines social drama with science fiction and horror. The film screened in competition in Venice in 2016, where Escalante won the Silver Lion for best director, shared with Andrei Konchalovsky. In 2017, “The Untamed” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin.
