GABRIEL AND THE MOUNTAIN
Synopsis
Before starting his studies at an elite American university, Gabriel Buchmann (João Pedro Zappa) wants to spend a year seeing the world. After ten months on the road, he arrives in Kenya, determined to explore the African continent – travelling through several countries, for a time accompanied by his girlfriend Cristina (Caroline Abras). His destination is Mount Mulanje in Malawi. In “Gabriel and the Mountain” (Brazil 2017), Fellipe Barbosa retraces the final stages of this journey: that of an idealistic, restless young man who was once his classmate.
Barbosa’s second feature, a Brazilian-French co-production, is based on a true story and was shot at the actual locations of the journey, largely with non-professional actors from the regions. In Cannes, the film screened in the Semaine de la Critique in 2017 and won the France 4 Visionary Award and the Fondation Gan prize there. In 2017, “Gabriel and the Mountain” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin.
