THE FLORIDA PROJECT
Synopsis
A strip of highway just outside Disney World, a budget motel called the “Magic Castle”. Here, six-year-old Moonee and her mother Halley live week to week, and Bobby (Willem Dafoe), the motel’s manager, holds the place together with a stern face and much hidden kindness. For Moonee, every day is a celebration: with her friends – among them Jancey, who has just moved in – she fearlessly explores her own world. Halley, meanwhile, sells counterfeit perfume outside hotels, using her daughter as a bid for sympathy. In “The Florida Project” (USA 2017), Sean Baker tells of a summer on the fringes of the theme park.
Baker shot on 35mm film. The film premiered in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs in Cannes in 2017, where it was considered a favourite of the programme; in the United States, A24 released it in cinemas in October 2017. In 2017, “The Florida Project” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin.
