THE DAY AFTER

Bongwan (Kwon Hae-hyo) runs a small publishing house. His wife has found a love letter in his desk and now knows of his affair with a former employee. On the same day, Areum (Kim Min-hee) starts her first day working for him – and his wife storms into the office, convinced she is facing the mistress. What follows is a day of misunderstandings, mistaken identities and endless conversations, interwoven with Bongwan’s memories of his infidelity. In “The Day After” (South Korea 2017), Hong Sangsoo tells of a man who becomes lost in his own evasions.

Shot in shimmering black and white, the film weaves together infidelity, mistaken identities and an unexpected spirituality. Hong wrote, produced and directed it, and composed the music. It premiered in competition at Cannes in May 2017. In 2017, “The Day After” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin.
