A MAN OF INTEGRITY

Reza has turned his back on the city. Together with his wife and their son, he lives a secluded life in the north of Iran, running a freshwater fish farm. But a private company has set its sights on his land and stops at nothing to force him to sell. Reza refuses to play along with the web of bribery, favours and intimidation that rules the area – and pays an ever higher price for it. In “A Man of Integrity” (Iran 2017), Mohammad Rasoulof tells the story of a man whose decency becomes a trap.

Rasoulof’s sixth feature, shot secretly in the north of the country, returns to the theme that runs through his entire body of work: how an authoritarian system silences independent voices. The film premiered in the Un Certain Regard section in Cannes in 2017, where it won the top prize. That same year, “A Man of Integrity” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin.
