LUCKY

Lucky is 90 and lives in a small desert town in California where everyone knows everyone. His day follows a fixed routine: cigarettes, yoga exercises, coffee at the diner, the bar in the evening. Then he falls at home, for no apparent reason. The doctor finds nothing wrong – lungs pristine despite a pack a day – and concludes only that Lucky is simply getting old. A diagnosis that unsettles him more than any illness. In “Lucky” (USA 2017), John Carroll Lynch tells of a cantankerous old man forced to confront his own mortality.

The film is actor Lynch’s directorial debut and one of the last roles of Harry Dean Stanton, who died two weeks before its US theatrical release; supporting roles include David Lynch and Ron Livingston. “Lucky” premiered at South by Southwest in March 2017, and won the Ecumenical Jury Prize in Locarno. In 2017, the film was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in the American Night section.
