THE RIDER
Synopsis
Brady was a rodeo rider until a fall left him with a severe head injury and threw him from the saddle. Now, with a weakened right hand and the risk of seizures, he lives again with his father and sister on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota, and doctors have told him he must never ride again. But riding is all he knows and all that defines him. Between a supermarket job, breaking in horses for others, and visits to his friend Lane, whom a similar accident left in a care facility, Brady must decide who he is without the saddle. In “The Rider” (USA 2017), Chloé Zhao tells a Western for the present day.
Brady Jandreau plays a version of himself; his sister Lilly, his father Tim and Lane Scott also appear as themselves. Zhao had met Jandreau while researching her first film. Shot in the Badlands, “The Rider” premiered in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs in Cannes on 20 May 2017 and won the Art Cinema Award there. In 2017, the film was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in the American Night section.
