FREIHEIT

Nora is 40, a lawyer, married, mother of two – and one day she is gone. She leaves her husband Philip, the children, her career and their Berlin flat behind and drifts through Europe: through a museum in Vienna, through encounters with strangers to whom she presents a different identity with small lies. Philip stays behind in Berlin with the children and a void he cannot explain. Jan Speckenbach tells “Freiheit” (Germany 2017), starring Johanna Wokalek and Hans-Jochen Wagner, as a psychodrama about a woman who gives up everything and a man to whom everything remains.

Speckenbach’s second feature is divided almost evenly between Nora and Philip, as she becomes an ever vaguer abstraction of her former self. The film premiered in the competition in Locarno in August 2017. In 2017, “Freiheit” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in the German Austrian Night section.
