Scene from Vermiglio

Synopsis

Vermiglio, a mountain village in the Alps, in the last year of the war, 1944. The village schoolteacher runs his large family with the same strictness as his classroom. Then one of the village’s sons brings home a comrade: Pietro, a Sicilian deserter who has fled the front. He stays, and his love for the teacher’s eldest daughter changes the course of every life in the house. With the seasons, the three very different daughters go their own separate ways, and the war that seemed so far away catches up with the village by roundabout means. “Vermiglio” by the Italian director Maura Delpero (Italy, 2024) tells of a year in the life of a family in which an entire order shifts.

Delpero, whose father comes from Vermiglio, built the film around the old family house and tells, in calm, painterly images, of women whose lives others decide. The film played in competition at Venice 2024 and won the Silver Lion, the Grand Jury Prize; it was Italy’s submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2024.
