BOOMERANG
Synopsis
Tehran, today. Sima is looking for a new flat for herself and her daughter Minoo after her marriage to Minoo’s father has broken down. He, in turn, gets back in touch with a former lover and is, on the side, searching for a rare owl. Minoo, meanwhile, gets to know a boy. “Boomerang” by the Iranian director Shahab Fotouhi (Iran/Germany, 2024) weaves these loosely connected stories into a picture of the city at a moment of transition: old relationships end, new ones begin, and one generation takes over from another.
Fotouhi, a participant in Berlinale Talents 2020, tells his story without urgency and with an eye for the everyday life of a metropolis rarely seen so calmly on screen. His feature debut premiered in the Giornate degli Autori at Venice 2024 and was supported by the Berlinale’s World Cinema Fund. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2024, in the WCF Berlinale section.
