HARVEST

A village without a name, somewhere in the Scottish Highlands, on the threshold of industrialisation. The inhabitants live off what the shared land provides, until strangers arrive: a cartographer surveying the fields, and a new landlord who wants to turn arable land into pasture. A fire in the lord’s barn provides the pretext to lay the blame on newcomers. Within seven days, the community falls apart. “Harvest” by the Greek director Athina Rachel Tsangari (Greece/United Kingdom/Germany/France, 2024) is an adaptation of the novel by Jim Crace and tells how property lines and profit destroy an order built on sharing.

Tsangari, with Caleb Landry Jones, Harry Melling and Arinzé Kene in the leading roles, shoots in an uncertain time and an uncertain place, making of it a parable of dispossession and xenophobia, filmed by Sean Price Williams. The film premiered in competition at Venice 2024. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2024.
