Scene from Der Tod wird kommen

Synopsis

Brussels. Gang boss Charles Mahr (Louis-Do de Lencquesaing) wants revenge for the murder of one of his couriers and hires the contract killer Tez (Sophie Verbeeck) for the job. She goes about her work with cool professionalism, but the closer she gets to the perpetrator, the less clear it becomes whose orders she is actually acting on. Around her, a web of lies and dependencies comes into view in which everyone is using everyone else, and the hunter herself becomes a target. “Der Tod wird kommen” by the German director Christoph Hochhäusler (Germany/Belgium/Luxembourg, 2024) sends its heroine through a faceless city of glass, concrete and night light.

Hochhäusler commits to the tradition of the thriller while cooling it down at the same time: the film is a neo-noir of precise images and terse dialogue, more interested in the mechanics of power than in any single shot fired. Under the title “La Mort viendra”, it premiered in competition at Locarno 2024. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2024, in the German Cinema section.
