Scene from Kill the Jockey

Synopsis

Remo Manfredini (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart) was once Argentina’s best jockey. Since then he has fallen prey to drugs and alcohol and rides for Sirena (Daniel Giménez Cacho), a businessman to whom he owes his life and who wants to send him back onto the track once more with a racehorse from Japan. His partner Abril (Úrsula Corberó), herself a jockey and pregnant by him, must choose between the child and the race. When Remo falls during the decisive race, he disappears from the hospital and walks through the city in a new guise – while Sirena has him hunted, dead or alive. “Kill the Jockey” by the Argentine director Luis Ortega (Argentina, 2024) is a neo-noir about transformation.

Ortega blends gangster film, love story and surreal comedy, letting his hero shed the ascriptions of gender and identity like a riding habit. The film played in competition at Venice 2024, shot by Timo Salminen. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2024.
