SEPTEMBER SAYS

September and July are sisters, less than ten months apart and inseparable. They speak a language of their own, keep the world at a distance, and September decides what July does. When September is suspended from school after an incident, their mother takes the two of them to a remote house on the Irish coast. There, July begins to resist her sister’s increasingly cruel games. “September Says” by the French-Greek actress and director Ariane Labed (Ireland/United Kingdom/France/Germany, 2024) is based on the novel “Sisters” by Daisy Johnson and tells of a bond that is at once protection and prison.

In her directorial debut, Labed lets the relationship between the sisters tip between children’s games and threat, finding a dark form of its own for the wildness of adolescence. The film premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2024. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2024.
