DIE SAAT DES HEILIGEN FEIGENBAUMS

Iman (Missagh Zareh), a devout and regime-loyal lawyer, is promoted to investigating judge at the Revolutionary Court in Tehran. The promotion comes with a service weapon and the task of signing verdicts without reading the files. At the same time, a wave of protest sweeps the country after the death of a young woman. Iman’s wife stands by him; their two daughters see images from the streets on their phones that state television does not show. When the weapon disappears, Iman’s suspicion turns against his own family. “Die Saat des heiligen Feigenbaums” by the Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof (Iran/France/Germany, 2024) tells of the collapse of a household in which the order of the state is meant to become the order of the family.

Rasoulof shot the film in secret in Iran and fled the country before its premiere, after being sentenced to eight years in prison and flogging. At Cannes 2024, the film received the Special Jury Prize. It opened Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2024, in the Opening Night section.
