Nina (Ia Sukhitashvili) is a gynaecologist at a clinic in rural Georgia. When a newborn dies during delivery, the father raises accusations against her, and the clinic opens an investigation. What might come to light weighs more heavily than the case itself: for years, Nina has been travelling to the surrounding villages to perform abortions in secret – procedures the law does not allow and families would not tolerate. “April” by the Georgian director Dea Kulumbegashvili (Georgia, 2024) follows a woman who risks her own life to leave others a choice, and answers to no one for it.

Kulumbegashvili tells her story in long, static shots beneath the wide sky of the Georgian landscape, letting a figure move through the film who resists any single reading. The film premiered in competition at Venice 2024, where it won the Special Jury Prize. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2024.
