Scene from Hundschuldig

Synopsis

Avril (Laetitia Dosch) is a lawyer in Lausanne who takes on, out of conviction, the cases no one can win. When her boss threatens her with dismissal, she vows to win the next trial. Then Dariuch (François Damiens) turns up in her office, a visually impaired man with his dog Cosmos, who has bitten three people and is to be put down. Avril takes the case and puts to the court the question of whether a dog can be a legal subject. “Hundschuldig” by the French actress and director Laetitia Dosch (Switzerland/France, 2024) is a comedy about a trial loosely based on a real case in France.

Dosch, who also plays the lead, pokes fun in her directorial debut at the justice system, the animal-rights movement and her heroine alike, without betraying any of them. The film premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2024, where the dog Kodi, playing Cosmos, received the Palm Dog. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2024.
