Synopsis
Sarah Polley questions her siblings, her father Michael and the family’s friends about her mother Diane, an actress and casting director who died in 1990 at the age of 55, when Sarah was eleven. Everyone describes a different Diane – vivacious, secretive, restless – and out of the contradictions emerges a family secret that concerns Polley’s own parentage. “Stories We Tell” by Sarah Polley, Canada, 2012, produced by the National Film Board of Canada.
Polley combines interviews with Super 8 footage from the family’s life, only late revealing which of it is genuine and which restaged – the film is as much about the unreliability of memory as it is about the family itself. It premiered in Venice in August 2012 and subsequently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. “Stories We Tell” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2013.
