ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE
Synopsis
Adam (Tom Hiddleston) lives in a decaying house in Detroit, recording bleak music on old equipment and despairing over what people have made of the world. Eve (Tilda Swinton) lives in Tangier, surrounded by books in every language, close to her old friend Christopher Marlowe (John Hurt). Both are vampires, their love has lasted for centuries. Eve travels to Detroit, and their shared nocturnal idyll ends when her wild younger sister Ava (Mia Wasikowska) turns up at the door. “Only Lovers Left Alive” by Jim Jarmusch, United Kingdom/Germany, 2013.
Jarmusch is less interested in bloodlust than in two cultivated bohemians talking about music, history and philosophy, and he takes his time doing so. The film screened in competition at Cannes in 2013. “Only Lovers Left Alive” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2013 in the Closing Night section.
