NINA
Synopsis
Rome in August, the city is empty. Nina (Diane Fleri) wants to move to China; she is taking Chinese lessons and earns her money over the summer looking after other people’s pets. She considers it out of the question that she could fall in love again – until she meets Fabrizio (Luca Marinelli), a young cellist. “Nina” by Elisa Fuksas, Italy, 2012 – shown internationally under the title “Nina in Rome” – follows her wanderings through a depopulated city in a hot summer.
Alongside the character, the film’s other focus is Rome’s modern architecture, which Fuksas – daughter of the architect Massimiliano Fuksas – photographs with an eye for surfaces and emptiness. A light, idiosyncratic debut with a taste for the peculiar, carried by Diane Fleri and Luca Marinelli. “Nina” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2013.
