LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON
Synopsis
A call from the clinic: six-year-old Keita, son of the successful architect Ryota (Masaharu Fukuyama) and his wife Midori, was switched at birth. The couple’s biological son has spent six years growing up in a less affluent but warm-hearted family. The two families get to know each other, the children are swapped on a trial basis, and Ryota, who measures his worth by achievement and lineage, must decide what makes a father – blood or time spent together. “Like Father, Like Son” (Soshite chichi ni naru) by Hirokazu Kore-eda, Japan, 2013.
Kore-eda tells the story without melodrama, in small everyday scenes in which the characters’ attitudes reveal themselves through gesture. The film screened in competition at Cannes in 2013 and won the Jury Prize; the premiere ended with a ten-minute standing ovation. “Like Father, Like Son” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2013.
