A TOUCH OF SIN
Synopsis
“A Touch of Sin” by Jia Zhangke (China, 2013) tells four loosely connected stories from different provinces of present-day China, all based on real incidents. A miner, incensed by corruption in his village, takes the law into his own hands. A migrant worker with no fixed abode discovers what possibilities a firearm opens up for him. A young receptionist at a sauna, having an affair with a married man, is driven past her limit by an abusive client. And a young factory worker moves from one discouraging job to the next. Three murders and a suicide, says Jia – events that everyone in China knows.
Jia combines the precise realism of his earlier work with motifs from wuxia cinema and Chinese opera; violence breaks abruptly into an otherwise calmly observed everyday life. The film screened in competition at Cannes in 2013 and won the award for best screenplay. “A Touch of Sin” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2013.
