WINTERMÄRCHEN

“Wintermärchen” (Germany, 2018) by Jan Bonny follows three young people living underground: Becky, Tommi and Maik form a right-wing terrorist cell. They live in back rooms and caravans, drink, argue, have sex and set out to kill – people they regard as outsiders. What they want is attention: they want the news to talk about them, and every time it doesn’t, their anger grows. Between the three of them, love, hatred and dependency shift from day to day, and their slogans of honour, pride and loyalty cannot withstand their own lack of direction.

Bonny wrote the screenplay with Jan Eichberg and shot the film in and around Cologne; Thomas Schubert, Ricarda Seifried and Jean-Luc Bubert play the three leads. The film shows the violence without explanation and without distance, as a chamber piece of a confinement in which every gesture becomes a threat. It premiered in August 2018 as the only German entry in the Locarno international competition. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2018, in the German Film section.
