OUR TIME
Synopsis
“Our Time” (Mexico, 2018) by Carlos Reygadas is set on a ranch on the Mexican high plateau where fighting bulls are bred. Juan, an internationally known poet, selects the animals; his wife Esther runs the operation. The two have children, a house full of guests and an open marriage – as long as they tell each other everything. When Esther begins an affair with Phil, an American horse trainer working on the ranch, Juan cannot bear the arrangement. He interferes, writes letters, arranges meetings, and the freedom he had championed turns into control.
Reygadas himself plays Juan, his wife Natalia López plays Esther, and their children play the children; the film runs over three hours and is built from wide landscape shots and a soundtrack of bellowing bulls and thunderstorms. It screened in competition at the Venice Film Festival in 2018. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2018.
