“Wildlife” (USA, 2018) by Paul Dano is set in 1960 in Great Falls, Montana. The Brinsons have only just moved there: Jerry works as a golf instructor, Jeanette looks after the household, and fourteen-year-old Joe goes to school. When Jerry loses his job, he signs up for a pittance to fight the wildfires burning in the mountains, leaving his wife and son behind. Jeanette takes a job as a swimming instructor, starts dressing differently and becomes involved with Warren Miller, an older car dealer. Joe, who works at a photography studio, watches his parents’ marriage fall apart and does not know whose side to take.

For his directorial debut, Paul Dano adapted Richard Ford’s 1990 novel together with Zoe Kazan; Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal play the parents, Ed Oxenbould the son. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2018. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2018, in the Sundance Night section.
