THREE FACES
Synopsis
“Three Faces” (Iran, 2018) by Jafar Panahi begins with a mobile-phone video. A girl from a village in north-western Iran, Marziyeh, addresses the well-known actress Behnaz Jafari in it: her family forbids her from studying at drama school, no one will help her – and the video ends with a rope. Shaken, Jafari walks off a shoot and sets off by car into the mountains with her friend, the director Jafar Panahi. In the village, where Turkish is spoken, the two encounter hospitality, superstition, a horn-honking system for the hairpin bends – and a third woman: an actress from before the revolution, living in seclusion at the edge of the village.
Panahi, banned in Iran from working and from travel, plays himself and once again films from inside the car. The film screened in competition at Cannes in 2018 and received the award for best screenplay there; Panahi was not permitted to travel to attend. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2018.
