GENESIS
Synopsis
“Genesis” (Canada, 2018) by Philippe Lesage tells of three young people in Québec and their first experiences of love. Guillaume, sixteen, is the class clown at a boys’ boarding school and secretly in love with his best friend – a feeling he cannot admit to himself and one that threatens his standing among his classmates. His half-sister Charlotte, eighteen, is caught off guard when her boyfriend proposes an open relationship, and begins testing herself anew in the city’s nightlife. In the film’s final section, twelve-year-old Félix spends a summer at camp and meets Béatrice there.
Lesage observes his characters in long, calm shots and lets them grow through rejection, transgression and their own desires, without binding the stories into a single whole. The film premiered in the Locarno international competition in August 2018. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2018.
