SUNSET

“Sunset” (Hungary, 2018) by László Nemes is set in Budapest in 1913. Írisz Leiter, a young milliner, arrives in the city from Trieste to work at the renowned hat salon that once belonged to her parents. The new owner, Oszkár Brill, wants to get rid of her. Then a stranger approaches her, looking for a certain Kálmán Leiter – a brother Írisz knew nothing about. She stays and follows his trail through the salons, back courtyards and carriages of the city, while the salon prepares for a visit from the imperial court, in a world dressing itself up once more shortly before its downfall.

As in “Son of Saul”, the camera, operated by Mátyás Erdély on 35mm and 65mm, stays close to the lead character throughout; everything around her remains blurred, half heard, half sensed. The film screened in competition at the Venice Film Festival in 2018 and received the FIPRESCI Prize there. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2018.
