Synopsis
“Still Recording” (Syria, 2018) by Saeed Al Batal and Ghiath Ayoub begins in 2011 in Damascus. Saeed and Milad, two art students, leave the capital and go to Douma, a suburb under the control of the insurgents, to take part in the revolution. They set up a radio station and a recording studio and teach others how to use a camera. Then come siege, bombardment and hunger. After a friend’s death, Milad paints graffiti on the destroyed walls of the city. In the end the two make it to Beirut, into an exile that is no arrival.
Over four years, the two directors shot more than 500 hours of material in the besieged city; the film is at once a chronicle of the uprising and a question of what filming means when recording is the only action left to take. At the Semaine de la Critique in Venice it received the Audience Award and the FIPRESCI Prize in 2018. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin, in the Berlinale World Cinema Fund section.
