THE WILD PEAR TREE
Synopsis
“The Wild Pear Tree” (Turkey, 2018) by Nuri Bilge Ceylan follows Sinan, who returns to his hometown of Çan in western Anatolia after finishing his studies. He carries a book manuscript with him, a collection of observations and stories about the region, and looks for someone to fund its printing: the mayor, a sand-quarry owner, a well-known writer. No one is interested. At home his father İdris awaits him, a village teacher, gambler and debtor whose creditors are now ringing at the door, and who is stubbornly digging a well on a dry hillside. Sinan despises him – and realises how much he resembles him.
Over more than three hours, Ceylan continues what he began in “Winter Sleep”: long conversations in which world views rub up against each other, set against a landscape that owes its characters nothing. The film screened in competition at Cannes in 2018. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2018.
