LA GOMERA
Synopsis
Cristi (Vlad Ivanov) is a police officer in Bucharest and on the payroll of the mafia. Because his colleagues are watching him, he travels to the Canary island of La Gomera to learn El Silbo, the whistled language with which the islanders have communicated across the ravines for centuries. With it he is meant to communicate with the gangsters under the eyes of the police and get Zsolt out of prison – the only one who knows where thirty million euros are hidden. Between hotel rooms, interrogations and a woman named Gilda, whistling becomes Cristi’s only way of telling the truth without being understood. “La Gomera” (Romania, 2019) was written and directed by Corneliu Porumboiu.
Porumboiu, known for his dry studies of language and bureaucracy, turns his attention here to a film noir with elements of black comedy; the cast spent two weeks learning to whistle from a Silbo teacher on the island. The world premiere took place in competition at the Cannes Film Festival 2019. “La Gomera” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2019.
