THE FEVER

Justino (Regis Myrupu) belongs to the Desana people and works as a security guard at the container port of Manaus. He lives with his daughter Vanessa (Rosa Peixoto) on the edge of the city, where the forest begins. When Vanessa gets a place to study medicine in Brasília, it is clear she will leave – and Justino falls ill with a fever the doctors can find no cause for. At night he hears an animal in the undergrowth; by day he grows tired and inattentive at work. Between the cranes of the port and the voices of the village he once came from, he searches for the place where he belongs. “The Fever” (Brazil, 2019) is the feature debut of Maya Da-Rin.

Da-Rin, who comes from documentary filmmaking, tells of a life between metropolis and rainforest in calm shots in which the uncanny emerges from the everyday. At the Locarno Film Festival 2019, Regis Myrupu won the Silver Leopard for best actor, and the film received the FIPRESCI Prize. “The Fever” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2019 in the Berlinale World Cinema Fund section.
