FIRE WILL COME
Synopsis
Amador (Amador Arias) returns to his village in the mountains of Galicia after two years in prison. He was convicted of starting a fire that nearly consumed the whole area. With his elderly mother Benedicta (Benedicta Sánchez) he takes up his former life again: growing cabbages, tending the cows, staying silent. The neighbours watch him, but no one asks questions. The summer turns dry, the woods around the village become tinder, and the title says what is coming. “Fire Will Come” (Spain, 2019) is the third feature by Oliver Laxe, who returns here to his family’s homeland and shoots in Galician.
Laxe tells the story in slow, precisely composed shots; cinematographer Mauro Herce shot it on 16mm, and nature is at once beauty and threat. At the Cannes Film Festival 2019 the film won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section, and in Mar del Plata the Golden Astor for best film. “Fire Will Come” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2019.
