Synopsis
Anna Bronsky (Nina Hoss) teaches violin at a Berlin music school. She had to give up her own career as a concert violinist, and invests the hopes that found no room there in her son Jonas. At the entrance audition she prevails over her colleagues in backing young Alexander (Ilja Monti) – she alone sees great talent in him. With growing ambition she focuses on developing him, pushing him on, and the closer the decisive recital comes, the more her family life falls out of balance. “Das Vorspiel” (Germany, 2019) is the second feature by Ina Weisse.
Weisse tells of a discipline that turns inward into panic, and of a pedagogy that can no longer be told apart from obsession. The film premiered in September 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival; in San Sebastián, Nina Hoss won the Silver Shell for best actress. It reached German cinemas in January 2020. “Das Vorspiel” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2019 in the German Night section.
