DEERSKIN
Synopsis
Georges (Jean Dujardin), 44, buys a fringed deerskin jacket from an old man in the countryside for 7,500 euros and checks into a small hotel in a mountain village. The jacket is more than an item of clothing: Georges wants to become a man worthy of it, and tells everyone who will listen that he is a film director. The barmaid Denise (Adèle Haenel), who dreams of editing films, believes him and wants to work on his project. With every further piece of deerskin Georges adds to his wardrobe, his view of the world shifts – along with his relationship to everyone still wearing other jackets. “Deerskin” (France, 2019) is by Quentin Dupieux.
Dupieux, who also wrote the screenplay, drives his black comedy into the absurd with dry consistency; the study of wounded masculinity reads at the same time as a parody of filmmaking itself. The world premiere took place on 15 May 2019 in the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. “Deerskin” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2019.
