EIN VERBORGENES LEBEN

Franz Jägerstätter (August Diehl) lives with his wife Franziska (Valerie Pachner) and their three daughters as a farmer in Radegund, a mountain village in Upper Austria. When the war begins, he is conscripted and refuses to swear the oath to Hitler and fight for the Wehrmacht. The village turns against him, the parish priest and the bishop advise him to give in, and the threat of execution hangs over him. Jägerstätter holds to his decision, sustained by his faith and his love for Fani, who does not try to talk him out of it. “Ein verborgenes Leben” (USA/Germany, 2019) by Terrence Malick tells the story of the Austrian conscientious objector who was executed in Brandenburg in 1943.

Malick weaves together landscape, correspondence and inner voices into a film about conscience and resistance without an audience. It premiered on 19 May 2019 in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where the film won the Ecumenical Jury Prize. “Ein verborgenes Leben” opened Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2019 in the Opening Night section.
