PASOLINI

Rome, November 1975. Pier Paolo Pasolini (Willem Dafoe) is editing “Salò”, gives interviews, works on a novel and composes his next film in his head. He eats with his mother and friends, is open with the press and silent about his nocturnal encounters with young men from the street. It is the last day of his life. “Pasolini” (France/Belgium/Italy 2014) by Abel Ferrara dispenses with the form of the biopic: the day is interwoven with scenes from the texts Pasolini was working on at the end, so that work and life can no longer be separated.

Ferrara, himself a director of provocation, approaches his subject in kaleidoscopic fashion; Dafoe plays him with striking resemblance, partly in English, partly in Italian. It premiered in 2014 in competition for the Golden Lion in Venice. At Around the World in 14 Films, the film closed the tenth edition in Berlin in 2015 – as the Closing Night.
