THE MOVE

In a small house by the river lives old Sagyn-bayke with his five-year-old granddaughter Ainazik, in step with the village and the seasons. One day his daughter Perizat arrives from the city, where she does everything she can to survive in a hostile environment, and urges him to sell the house and move with her to Bishkek. The old man gives in after long hesitation. But when he arrives in the city with the child, Perizat has already lost the money, and the family has nowhere to stay. “The Move” (Köch, Kyrgyzstan 2014) by Marat Sarulu confronts the three of them with a decision.

A quiet film about the run-down edges of the Kyrgyz capital, about rural flight and the question of what holds a family together once the ground beneath it has been sold. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2015.
