LOUDER THAN BOMBS

Three years after the death of war photographer Isabelle Reed (Isabelle Huppert), an exhibition of her work is being prepared, and a newspaper article is due to appear that will also address the circumstances of her death. Her husband Gene (Gabriel Byrne) has never told their younger son Conrad (Devin Druid) that it was not an accident. The older son, Jonah (Jesse Eisenberg), returns home to go through his mother’s photographs, and finds a withdrawn brother and a father asking for closeness – while battling crises of his own. “Louder Than Bombs” (Norway/France/Denmark 2015) is the first English-language film by the Norwegian Joachim Trier.

Trier assembles flashbacks, dreams and the perspectives of the three men into a family portrait in which each of them knows a different version of the dead woman. It premiered in competition at Cannes on 18 May 2015 – after “Oslo, 31 August” in Un Certain Regard, Trier’s first film in the main competition; it later received the Nordic Council Film Prize. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2015.
