Scene from The Treasure

Synopsis

Costi works for a real-estate firm in Bucharest and lives with his family in a modest flat. His neighbour Adrian asks him for money: he wants to hire an expensive metal detector, because a treasure is said to be buried in the garden of his late grandfather’s country house. Costi is sceptical but lets himself be drawn in, and together with the detector specialist Cornel the three of them drive out to the countryside to dig. “The Treasure” (Comoara, Romania 2015) by Corneliu Porumboiu, played almost entirely by non-professionals, was shot in autumn 2014 in Teleorman County and in Bucharest.

A laconic comedy in which the search for gold becomes a negotiation over law, history and neighbourliness. It premiered on 21 May 2015 in Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section, where it received the Prix Un Certain Talent. The film was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2015.
