ADIEU AU LANGAGE
Synopsis
A married woman and a single man meet, become a couple, quarrel and separate again. In between, a dog roams through forests and along riverbanks, and it is the true protagonist: Roxy Miéville, the director’s own dog. In “Adieu au langage”, a French-Swiss production from 2014, Jean-Luc Godard dissolves every narrative into fragments. Images, quotations and music are collaged together, and reflections on geometry, consciousness, death, zero and infinity run alongside one another and contradict each other. The people in this film, the director suggests, are blinded by their own consciousness and no longer see the world as it really is. The dog still can.
“Adieu au langage” is Godard’s first feature shot in 3D and runs seventy minutes. The stereoscopy is used not as an effect but as a means of setting images against one another and splitting perception. The film screened in competition in Cannes in 2014, where it won the Jury Prize; the National Society of Film Critics in the USA named it the best film of the year. “Adieu au langage” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2014.
