FOXCATCHER

Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) won Olympic gold in wrestling in Los Angeles in 1984, just like his older brother Dave (Mark Ruffalo). But while Dave makes a living as a coach and family man, Mark gets by on appearances before school classes and trains alone. Then John E. du Pont (Steve Carell), heir to a chemical fortune and one of the richest men in the USA, gets in touch. He brings Mark to his estate, Foxcatcher Farm in Pennsylvania, intending to build and fund a wrestling team for the 1988 Games in Seoul. Mark moves into a guest house on the grounds, wins competitions, and du Pont becomes his mentor and father figure. When Dave finally joins the team too, the arrangement begins to tip out of balance. Bennett Miller’s “Foxcatcher”, from the USA, 2014, is based on a true story.

Miller stages the material as a slow, cold drama about money, dependency and a patron who buys what he cannot be. Steve Carell plays du Pont under prosthetics and with minimal expression, far removed from his comic roles. Bennett Miller won the award for best director in Cannes in 2014. “Foxcatcher” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2014.
