LA DISTANCIA
Synopsis
A Russian oligarch has bought a performance work, along with the artist who created it, and locked both of them in a disused power plant in Siberia. Years later, the man trapped inside calls on three small-statured Russians with telepathic and telekinetic gifts, who communicate without words, for help. Their task: to retrieve the work, titled “La distancia”, from the plant. In “La distancia” (Spain, 2014), Sergio Caballero tells a heist story like no other the cinema knows – with a power plant that begins to speak, a guard, a bucket and a great deal of snow.
Because all the characters communicate in thought, Caballero mixes the languages as he pleases: Russian for the three and the guard, German for the artist, Chinese for another character. Caballero is a co-founder of Barcelona’s Sónar festival and comes from electronic music and art; his film is a surreal heist, half riddle, half joke, shot in stark winter images. It premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2014. “La distancia” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2014.
