TORPEDO

Mia is fifteen and deeply traumatised. After her mother’s death she moves in with her aunt Cleo and finds herself amid her circle, a left-wing cultural scene that has settled into resignation. Mia has given up hope of ever growing up in a proper family, and tries to make a place for herself in an adult world stranger than any teenager could imagine. Helene Hegemann’s “Torpedo” (Germany 2008) tells this in forty-two minutes, at high tempo and in fragments – as the collision of a teenage girl with a milieu that expects nothing more.

Hegemann was sixteen when she made her debut film; Alice Dwyer plays Mia. “Torpedo” screened at the Hof Film Festival in 2008 and won an award at the Max Ophüls Prize Film Festival in 2009. “Torpedo” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2008, in the Spezial Deutschland section.
