LIVERPOOL

Farrel is a sailor on a freighter. When the ship calls at Ushuaia, he asks for shore leave: he wants to visit his mother in the village he left twenty years ago. His most faithful companion is a flask of vodka. He takes his time – sitting in a strip club, riding on the back of a timber truck through the snowy mountains of Tierra del Fuego, falling asleep with the flask in hand. When he arrives, his ailing mother has forgotten him, and to his daughter Analía he is a stranger. Lisandro Alonso’s “Liverpool” (Argentina 2008) assembles, through observation, what ties this man to the place – and what has long since separated him from it.

Juan Fernández plays Farrel. Alonso tells the story with little dialogue and in long takes, in which the journey matters more than the destination; the title is explained only in the final scene. “Liverpool” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2008.
