Josie has spent twenty years as the caretaker of a decaying petrol station in a small Irish town. He knows everyone in the area but belongs nowhere. Over the course of one summer he tries to break out of his isolation, seeking closeness in his own clumsy way – until his small refuge is threatened and his life takes a turn he does not see coming. Lenny Abrahamson’s “Garage” (Ireland 2007), from a screenplay by Mark O’Halloran, tells of the edge of a village where a person is overlooked, and of the cruelty that indifference can hold.

Pat Shortt, known in Ireland chiefly as a comedian, plays Josie; Anne-Marie Duff and Conor J. Ryan support him. The film premiered in May 2007 at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes, where it received the CICAE Art Cinema Award. “Garage” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2008.
