FIREWORKS WEDNESDAY
Synopsis
Tehran on the eve of Chaharshanbe Suri, the fire festival before the Nouruz new year. Rouhi, a young woman shortly before her wedding, is sent by an agency to clean the flat of Mozhdeh and Morteza Samiei, who are due to fly to Dubai the next morning. But the flat is a battlefield: Mozhdeh is convinced her husband is having an affair with the divorced neighbour Simin, ever since she found her number in the phone records. Soon Rouhi is asked to spy for her, and Mozhdeh begins her own investigations. Asghar Farhadi’s “Fireworks Wednesday” (Iran 2006) follows a single day on which everyone is hiding something and the outsider gradually grasps what is going on between the two of them.
Farhadi wrote the screenplay together with Mani Haghighi; Hedieh Tehrani, Taraneh Alidoosti and Hamid Farokhnezhad play the leads. A marriage drama that unfolds like an investigation, its truth dependent on perspective. The film first screened at the Fajr Film Festival in Tehran, where it won four awards. “Fireworks Wednesday” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2008.
