TIMES AND WINDS
Synopsis
A mountain village above the sea, where the day is structured by the five calls to prayer – hence the original title “Beş Vakit”, five times. Three children on the threshold of adulthood: Ömer, the imam’s son, who receives nothing but contempt from his father and so contemplates the unthinkable; his friend Yakup, who is infatuated with the young teacher; and Yıldız, who shrinks from growing up and from what she has come to know about the lives of adults. Reha Erdem tells, in “Times and Winds” (Turkey 2006), of growing up in a place where people struggle day after day to make a living and children learn early the harshness of their fathers.
Erdem, who also wrote the screenplay, structures the film around the times of prayer, setting the narrowness of the village against the openness of the landscape. At the Istanbul Film Festival, “Times and Winds” was named best Turkish film of the year. It was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2007.
