DREAMS OF DUST

Mocktar Dicko, a farmer from Niger, arrives at a gold mine in the north-east of Burkina Faso. He is looking for work, but above all he wants to forget what lies behind him. The mine is a prison of dust and wind, in which men crawl into the earth for a few grains of gold. There he meets the widow Coumba, who endures the same hardship as he does, but unlike him still dreams of another life. Laurent Salgues tells, in “Dreams of Dust” (Burkina Faso 2006, original title “Rêves de poussière”), of a place where hope is a raw material, mined away day by day through labour.

The film is Salgues’ first feature, made as a co-production between France, Burkina Faso and Canada. It screened at Sundance in 2007 in the World Cinema competition. “Dreams of Dust” was shown at Around the World in 14 Films in Berlin in 2007.
